Today’s Wonder of the Day was inspired by Julie. Julie Wonders, “what is poetry” Thanks for WONDERing with us, Julie!

Have a great time.

Wait a second. That's a horrible poem. It doesn't even rhyme! Let's try this again…

Roses are red,

Violets are blue.

Welcome to Wonderopolis!

Today's poetry Wonder is just for you!

There! That's better. Not a lot better, but a little better…

We have to admit. We're a bit out of practice when it comes to writing poetry. Actually, do people even write poetry today?

You bet they do! In fact, the 2011 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer.

Because of the rise of other forms of writing, such as popular fiction, you won't find today's bestseller lists filled with books of poetry. That doesn't mean, though, that there aren't still poets out there publishing works of great beauty.

Have you ever thought of a poem as beautiful? Read some poetry and you'll find that poems really are works of art created with words instead of paint. Where a popular fictional story might tell a good tale, a short poem can transform a few words into something that excites the emotions and stirs the soul.

You may even already enjoy poetry more than you realize. Have you ever been moved by the words of a song? Many songwriters are poets at heart, creating works of art with words that they then set to music. In fact, some rap artists are considered by some to be modern-day poets. Some rap and hip hop artists are even inspired by modern poetry slams.

But don't take our word for it! Find the lyrics to a few of your favorite songs and try reading through them without listening to the music. It depends upon what type of music you like to listen to, but we believe it won't take you long to find a song whose lyrics speak to you just like a poem!
