Who would you rather hang around with? Someone who always acts down in the dumps? Or someone who manages to see the good around them, even when things aren’t always going great?

It’s no surprise that people enjoy being around positive people more than negative people. It’s just more fun to be around someone who’s upbeat and looking for the good in things. Life can be hard sometimes, but if you try, you can always find good things to be thankful for.

Having a positive attitude can help you in many ways. If you have a positive attitude, you’re more fun to be around. Your friends will definitely appreciate you more if you see the silver lining rather than just the dark clouds!

If you work hard to have a positive attitude, you might be surprised by how much better you feel about yourself and life in general. When you turn away from the negative and focus on the positive, you open your mind to appreciate all the good things around you that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Having a positive attitude can also reduce your stress level. The less stress you feel, the better you will feel overall. So if you’ve been feeling tired or just “blah,” put on a happy face and you just might feel better soon.

But how can you have a positive attitude when life is hard? It’s more than just turning life’s lemons into lemonade. Having a positive attitude can take some hard work. But it’s worth it. Here are some ways you can develop and maintain a positive attitude even in the midst of life’s troubles:

  • A positive attitude doesn’t mean ignoring life’s troubles. It just means being an optimist and looking for the good in things, rather than being a pessimist and concentrating on the bad in things. Sometimes your perspective can make all the difference in the world.
  • Identify those areas of your life that might not be going so well. These are the areas likely to make you think negative thoughts. Focus on one area at a time and think of ways you can find the positive in things.
  • Smile and laugh! Yes, it can be that simple. Learn to love life, no matter what’s going on. Smile at others and they will smile back at you. Have fun and find the humor in life. Sometimes laughter really is the best medicine.
  • Exercise! Get off the couch and get moving. Being active and healthy can give you a completely different outlook on life. When you feel better physically, you often naturally feel better mentally, too.
  • Hang out with optimists! Remember that question at the beginning of today’s Wonder? The more you hang out with positive people, the easier it will be to have a positive attitude.

  1. I sort of have a negative and a positve attitude, it depends on the day sometimes the time, like if somone dies I have a negative attitude and if I get the M.V.P and then get a trophy I’m positive!
    -Sam I.

    • Great point, Sam, our attitudes are often affected by our moods and the situations we’re in. It’s tough to have a positive attitude when we’re feeling down. However, when we do feel that way, it’s helpful to talk about how we feel with a parent or an adult we trust. They can help us over that hump and even help us see how we can turn a negative situation into a positive one! Thanks for sharing your comment! :)

  2. I do not have a positive attitude, so I wrote this rhyme because I say it to myself all the time: Sometimes I am happy, sometimes I am sad. Sometimes I am angry, which also means mad. Sometimes I have confidence, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I’ll do things for people, but sometimes I won’t. If you don’t have a positive attitude you can sing this song, but if you do not want to, you’ve got all year long. – Cole F.

    • What a great, creative rhyme, Wonder Friend Cole! Sometimes we feel happy and other times we feel mad. This happens to all of us! We are glad you shared your comment with us today and we hope you’ll keep your chin up when you’re feeling down. Looking on the bright side of things is a great way to keep a positive attitude. We hope you’ll keep trying! :)

  3. It is scientifically possible to identify a positive and a negative, but for attitude it is a bit tricky. But I have an idea, for science, positive plus a negative equals a positive(+ + – = +). So, if a good friend with a bad person might make a very good friendship, do you get the scientific method? ;) :D

    • What a great idea, Carlos, we think you are on to something! :)

Sometimes a positive attitude can be added to a negative attitude, and as long as there is more positivity than negativity, you’ve got yourself two positive attitudes! What a super scientific attitude! :)

  4. A powerful force (machine) is engaged and moving forward.
Practice is needed to “get it” but once you get it you need never look back.
We can create a life of stress with all those things we don’t want, or we can create a life
of wonder where all that comes to us is positive, abundant,
joyful and loving. The Law of Attraction will easily and effortlessly attract and improve the relationships you are meant to have.
This secret, magic ingredient is commonly known as “action”.

    • Thank you for helping remind us how important it is to have a positive attitude, Wonder Friend Selma.

Try It Out

Do you have a positive attitude? Grab a few family members or friends to help you explore one or more of the following activities:

  • Do you always look for the positive things in life? Test yourself. Think back over the last 24 hours. Make a list of all the things — both good and bad — that have happened to you in the past day. Which list is longer? Did you list things like waking up, having food to eat, having clothes to wear, and having a place to live? Look at your list of bad things. Is there any way to put a positive spin on those events? Do any of the black clouds have a silver lining?
  • Do you think exercise can really help improve your attitude? Give it a try! Keep a journal this week of how you’re feeling from day to day. On at least half the days over the next week, do at least 30 minutes of some type of exercise. Write your thoughts on how you feel before and after exercise. Keep track of your feelings over the course of the week. Do you notice you feel better on the days you exercise? Why do you think that is?
  • Even if you’re happy most of the time, it’s still possible to let negative thinking creep up on you every once in a while. One was to foster a positive attitude is to work at it. This can take many forms. One way to increase positive thinking is to practice turning negative thinking into positive thinking. Here’s an example:

Negative thought:       I can’t.

Positive thought:          I can.

Of course, turning a negative into a positive isn’t always as simple as turning “I can’t” into “I can.” You may have valid reasons for thinking “I can’t” at first. But with some thought and creativity…and maybe even some help from friends and family members…you might just be able to see possibilities you didn’t envision before. So give it a try! Grab a friend or family member and take a look at the negative thoughts and attitudes below. Can you come up with a way to change each of them into something positive? If you can, you’re on your way to a positive attitude!

  • “I’ve never done that before.”
  • “That’s way too hard for me.”
  • “There’s no way that will ever work!”
  • “I’m never going to be as good as her at this.”
  • “I don’t have enough time (or money or skills or brains) to do this.”
