Yesterday a friend and I went for a walk down by the river, the Clark Fork. We strolled along the riverbank then found a nice place on the rocks to hang out and talk. We didn’t have much of a reprieve from the smoke created by Montana wildfires but it was peaceful with the sound of rushing water only a few feet away.
We sat for a while and watched a couple of surfers, that’s right…surfers riding the waves. It was cool – and a little odd – to see a couple of “surfer-dudes” walking on the riverbank, surfboards in hand. I’m originally from Hawaii. Surfers are part of the landscape there. In Montana…this was definitely a first.
Missoula is home to Brennan’s Wave, a small section of the river that was turned into a wave-making water park for kayakers – and surfers too. I’ve known about Brennan’s wave since they built it a couple of years ago – I’ve just never seen any of the events that take place there. Did you know (probably not) that Outside Magazine recently named little-old Missoula, Montana as one of the best river towns in America?
Wonderopolis hasn’t covered surfing – yet – but they did do a wonder about the difference between kayaks and canoes!

Are they going surfing in creek?
Hi there Terry, thanks for stopping by to read the Wonder Family Fines’ blog about surfing! The water is actually coming from a river, but if you take a closer look at the post, you’ll read:
“Missoula is home to Brennan’s Wave, a small section of the river that was turned into a wave-making water park for kayakers – and surfers too.”
It’s pretty cool to imagine going surfing somewhere other than an ocean!
