Last Friday, Madalyn and I went to eat with my parents at Deacon Tower Grille. That is a restaurant which overlooks the Wake Forest University football field.

My father graduated from WFU and my parents have recently starting buying seasons tickets to football games.  I grew up in Winston-Salem, NC (where WFU is located) and enjoyed going to games, especially the Women’s Basketball games that were played at the gym on campus!

My husband graduated from North Carolina State in Raleigh, NC. While he also grew up in Winston-Salem, he does not necessarily hold the same warm feelings towards WFU that I do. When Madalyn was little, he said that she could not wear the WFU shirt from my parents in our house …. I just smiled and let her wear the shirt!

Madalyn knows that her grandfather really likes the Demon Deacons and that her father really likes the Wolfpack …. so  when we first pulled into the Deacon Tower Grille parking lot, Madalyn said, “My daddy would not like it here.”

After dinner, my dad drove us through the WFU campus and told us about the buildings where he had classes … (In the early 70s)

I remember doing that a number of times when I was growing up too. Wake Forest is for the most part an enclosed campus with lots of trees, brick buildings, and a large grass area in the middle known as the “Quad” with a large library and gorgous chapel along wtih gates at each end of campus.

So when I think of collleges or universities, I think of tree-covered, grassy areas, and brick buildings …. I always have based on my childhood experiences at Wake Forest …

My college choice, Meredith College, was strongly influenced by my concept of “what a college should look like” …

At Meredith, you go through a front gate to get to brick buildings, trees, large grassy areas, a nice library, and a lovely chapel …

I know not all colleges and universities are like that …   NC State  and Appalachian State  are spread out with some major roads running through them, but in my mind, those campuses just don’t have the “college feel” that I grew up with  …

After we got home from dinner at Deacon Tower Grille, Madalyn looked at me and asked, “Mommy when I grow up and go to school, am I going to be a Deacon or a Wolfpack?”

My reply: “Well, you could be an Angel …”

*************************************

I guess it is never too early to get her started thinking about her options ….

I wonder what her concept of “what a college should look like” will be ….

I wonder what college will be like when she graduates from high school …

I even wonder what high school will be like when she gets there …

I wonder what types of learning experiences she will have …
